Shawnee State Park
Located near the Ohio River in southern Ohio, Shawnee State Park welcomes visitors into its Appalachian foothills region. Many, many activities are available at this state park and the surrounding state forest. Roughly 60,000 acres of land and water make up the total region.
Land Activities
Thousands of acres of forest give visitors ample opportunity to enjoy the flora and fauna of the region. Miles of hiking trails weave through the park and forest for those wishing to lace up their boots. The area is nicknamed, “the Little Smokies,” for a reason, so be prepared for changes in elevation at this state park. Bridle trails also make their way through the park and surrounding state forest for those that wish to bring their horses along. A disc golf course, sand volleyball courts, picnic areas, and a nearby 18-hole golf course all make this a well-rounded state park in which to spend time.
Staying at Shawnee
Shawnee State Park offers plenty of ways for people to spend several days in the region. There are over 100 campsites for tents or RV’s. Most of these have electric hook-ups as well. In addition, Shawnee is one of the nine Ohio state parks that offers a full-service lodge. Whether you are planning a family reunion, a work outing, or a wedding, Shawnee State Park Lodge may be the place for you!
Water Activities
Shawnee boasts two lakes for those interested boating, fishing, and swimming. A beach is available at each of the lakes (Turkey Creek and Roosevelt) for those wishing to swim. Each lake also has a boat ramp for easy access for boats with electric motors. In addition, boaters have access to the Ohio River through the marina facility.
Both lakes offer fishermen with opportunities for catching bass, catfish, bluegill, and trout. Each year, Turkey Creek hosts a trout derby.
